Week 12: Holy Smoke! And Learning A New Language (Not Spanish)
I dedicate this email and its title to the one and only Doctor Butta.
We actually had a pretty awesome week! We had a lot of appointments and were able to connect with some old friends. This was the highlight: we go to a house to teach a Spanish class with a man name Guillermo (fun fact: that's William in Spanish). We get inside the house and turns out he brought all of his friends. So there I was, sitting down in a house with my companion, a mexican, and a house full of fifteen mexicans, in the city of Edmonton Canada, teaching them English and the gospel of Jesus Christ. In Spanish. Let me tell you, you can't make this stuff up. And to top it all off, they say they want to come to church! They seemed eager, and with God all things are posible, so I'll have faith in them. Diana is also doing great! I appreciate all the people who have emailed me and told me they're praying for her, I've seen these prayers be answered and the power they have. We taught her about tithing on friday and she commited to following that. The spirit really does testify of truth.
A funny thing I've noticed is whenever I first get into a lesson and the Spanish people notice me (and my whiteness) they always love trying their English out. And it's always before, during, and after the lesson. It's funny because I'm trying to practice Spanish, they're trying to practice English, and good ol Elder Girabaldi is translating for both of us. Spanglish is a crazy language.
Now the reason this email is titled holy smoke is because it has been literally smoky outside for the past three days because of the wildfires. I have been smelling like a campfire for that time as well. Everything smells like camping. And I also have not seen the sun for that time as well. It's been soo weird, I feel like I'm living in a gray dome. Apparently this is a normal part of Edmontonian life, so I figure I'll just be along for the ride.
The spiritual thought for this week is about obedience. Now you may have heard that missions have a lot of rules, but that's actually not true. Missions have commandments! Everything that is in the standards and said by your mission President is inspired counsel designed to help you become a more effective missionary that helps others come closer to Christ. If you're preparing to serve a mission within the next year, I would reccomemd becoming familiar with the standards. If you commit to following them now, then adjusting to missionary life will be that much easier. This can apply to everyone too, the "mission President" of the world is President Russel M. Nelson, and he's got some inspired counsel of his own. If we listen and apply what he says, we will be blessed.
That's all for this week. I appreciate all of your emails and I love hearing from you all!
Adiós,
